Alaska Backpack Meeting

Monday, February 26th we will start planning the Alaska trip for July 14th to the 24th. I need to know commitments to the trip. This meeting is for Scouts and parents.

We need commitments for the trip and understanding that this is a very physical trip with 40-50 lb backpacks carried for around 25-30 miles.

We will discuss the options and the price of the trip.  We will also discuss training and physical expectations as we do training hikes in the spring.

It is time to get busy and start dreaming about Alaska!!!

Winter Retreat Photos Posted!

What a pleasure it was to be the SMIC for yet another successful winter retreat. There wasn’t as much snow as we would have liked, however, an enormous amount of fun was had.

The young men on this trip made the best of their time hiking to the ridge, sledding on the short paths they could find and burning quesadillas for dinner. Sometimes unstructured events end with a fun time. Highlight for the young men was the hike to the top of boundary trail to the rock formations. Great leadership by our SPL, Alexander R. who kept the group on time and on task. The outstanding young men attending were Alexander R, Jackson D, Cooper P, Davis M, Vince P, Aidan S, Andrew N, and Caleb N. The young men fell to sleep hard Saturday night with a day of fun and a belly full of Dutch oven peach cobbler.

Many thanks to Mr. Bielkiewicz, Mr. Prebynski and Mr. Naber for supporting this outing and for the many laughs. We were all impressed with the young men on this trip. Now it’s time to plan the ski trip.

August Backpacking Trip

Let’s Backpack!  Anyone who wants to backpack has the opportunity to join us on August 21st and 22nd for our trek in Lost Creek Wilderness.  If you have never really backpacked before, however, want to try it out, this is the time to do it!  If you don’t have a backpack, Mr. Johnson can loan you one to use on the trip.  All you need is an adventurous attitude and a good pair of boots!  We won’t even make you eat Spam (although Mr. Strauss and Mr. Johnson love Spam).  Go to the Troop 640 website and sign up.  Anyone planning to go, we will get together at the Troop Picnic and talk.  We will have a gear shakedown some evening before we go.  Any questions at all about gear, etc reach out to Mr. Johnson or Mr. Strauss for advice.

Let’s get out and explore the trails!

Update: Here is the suggested packing list. We will discuss this further at the picnic on 8/16.
