A huge shout out and thank you to all that helped get a ton of work done earlier today at our annual trailer cleanup! While several adults worked to repair our broken trailer corral, Scouts emptied and reorganized the trailers, pulled copious weeds, organized our wood piles, performed wasp/bee duty, and consumed pizza! We worked from approximately Noon until just after 5:00pm. Photos at the normal location on the website!

Scout Troop 989 would like to invite you to participate in the Grand Parade of the 96th annual Western Welcome Week the morning of Saturday, August 17! Coffee and Donuts will be provided.
This parade runs a 1.7 mile route down Littleton Blvd through a cheering crowd. It will be our glorious job to follow behind the Westernaires who are riding a couple dozen horses and shovel up the poop that they leave behind. WAIT! KEEP READING! It is actually a lot of fun! Our energetic scooping activities make us a crowd favorite, with the whole crowd cheering us on.
If you have never been in a parade, it is an experience that you will never forget, and are some of my best memories. This is also a chance to earn a full morning’s worth of service hours.
Logistics:
We will meet at 8am at the Arapahoe Community College parking lot, Northwestern corner. From there, we will walk to the office of Dave Law, who will be providing coffee (for parents) and donuts, then on to the starting line of the parade. We will complete the parade route near the same parking lot at ACC around noon. If you are able to attend, please contact me (Chris Brown) directly at (remember to CC another adult). We will need shovels, push brooms, and wheel barrows. If you can provide, please let me know.
We neglected to bring up our annual Trailer Cleanup which is happening this Sunday at the church (around back where the trailers are stored). We will pull the trailers out of the storage area, clean up weeds, chop up wood for future fires, and start fixing the fence in addition to reorganizing the trailers so we are ready for the winter camping season. Please drop by anytime after Noon as we will work until we feel we are finished. Food will be provided – bring water and work gloves.
I am doing my Eagle Scout Project this Saturday, August 26th from 9 AM to 3PM. I am building a pergola at Light of the World Church.
I really need Scouts and due to BSA safety guidelines, I also need adults. Please consider signing up to help me. It would be great to have at least 4 youth and 4 adults during the whole time I am planning to build. Please come for as long as you can during those times.
We will build pergolas in the Rosary Garden at Light of the World.
This is in the parking lot of Light of the World (10306 W Bowles Ave, Littleton, CO 80127).
Please sign up on the website ASAP. If you forget and want to just show up Saturday, that’s allowed as well! Service hours will be granted!
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a Shred-a-thon for members of the community to drop off unwanted documents to be shredded. Volunteers are needed to help staff the event. The event is on Saturday May 20th from 7am to Noon at the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office (13101 E. Broncos Pkwy). If you are interested please see Mr. Finley.
We received the following email about the upcoming Train Show. Last year, several of our Scouts attended and obtained the Railroading Merit Badge – if you want to just attend, that’s fine, but if you’re interested in volunteering, read on!
Subject:Scouting Volunteers Request – Rocky Mountain Train Show
Good evening.
The Rocky Mountain Train Show will be held on Saturday, April 1st and Sunday April 2nd this year and we are looking for Scout and Scouter volunteers in uniform to help staff this event.
If you are not familiar with the Train Show (Rocky Mountain Train Show) It is being held at the National Western Stock Show Complex and is the largest model train event west of the Mississippi River. For many years RMTS has been a strong supporter of the Scouting Program. All Scouts and Scouters in uniform get into the show for free. They host the Railroading Merit Badge and provide a large booth for Information and recruitment. All they ask in return is that we provide some volunteers to assist with ticket sales and set up/take down.
We are asking for your help both support this event with some time as well as getting the word out to other Scouts and Scouters that would volunteer to provide a few hours of support to this very fun event.
We are looking for volunteers to spend a few hours on Saturday and Sunday (April 1&2)
Ticket Sales
Running the Kiddie Train loading and unloading.
Staffing the Scouting USA Information booth
This will have a STEM display that includes an operating Ham Radio, Nuclear Science Display, 1st Aid / Outdoor Essentials Display and whatever other ideas you might also come up with.
We also need helpers with Thursday and Friday Set-up.
If you can help, please contact Brad Johnston, Thanks!
My church (Waterstone) is hosting an event where they are assembling food packs to be sent to children overseas. They have 2 work days Friday 3/3 afternoon/evening; and Saturday 3/4 all day. There are 2 hour block to sign up for. I think this sounds like a great service opportunity for scouts that need service hours. Last year the spots filled up quickly. They are opening up registration tomorrow 2/6 at 9am.
Member of the church can sign up early, so I have already registered Nick for Saturday morning.
This Saturday, 5 November, starting at 2 PM (or immediately after we are done with annual planning), we have a service opportunity. Each year we help Genesis Presbyterian Church, our Chartering Organization, with raking leaves at the church. The leaf raking provides us a number of great things. Most importantly, it is a wonderful way to say “thank you” to Genesis for chartering us and allowing us to use their facility throughout the year. Second, it provides an opportunity for service hours needed for rank advancement. It also allows us to live the Scout Oath and law through “helping other people” and being “Helpful” through volunteering without expecting a reward.
Please come out to Genesis this Saturday to provide some time helping us get the church ready for the fall.
Come volunteer at the annual Red Carpet Event – this is one of our best opportunities to recruit new Webelos to join us next year!
It’s this Thursday Nov 3rd from 6-8 pm at Colorado Adventure Point If you are helping out with this Event please try to be there by 5:50pm. Wear your Class A Uniform.
Why should you volunteer to be a direct contact leader in 640? Aside from making sure that our kids get to go camping and advance in the program, volunteering allows you to empower our youth to create the kind of community and world you and they want to live in. You can help our kids build skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, and planning – all while working on your own. Not to mention that volunteering gives you access to a large Scouting family. You can meet other adults with similar interests and make good friends to help you take on new challenges and adventures. So aside from just taking on various roles as they are vacated by the adults of (soon to be) former Scouts, it’s important to remember that Scouting is a family activity and kids stay in longer and get more out of the program when one or more adult family members are also involved. Please reach out to me or one of the ASMs about finding an opportunity that’s right for you.
