Winter Primer Campout
Despite the small turn out, this weekend’s Winter Primer was a lot of fun. On Saturday morning, the six of us had a short hike up to the campsite at White Ranch Park. We get our tents set-up, had lunch, and off the Scouts went on a completely unscheduled and unstructured adventure. They got to do some bouldering, bridge building, “cave” exploration, and perhaps learned a little about geology along the way. This was followed by dinner, S’mores and cracker barrel (I have never been so full on a camping trip). We had a nice & safe propane campfire and shared tall tales of all of our adventures – while also admiring an amazing view of Denver. We got to sleep in the next morning and the boys returned to their adventure area before we had breakfast. After that, we packed up, had a brief Scout’s Own service and hiked back down to our vehicles. There wasn’t much snow up there and the temperature didn’t get much below 30F, but the boys still learned a fair amount about winter camping, the importance of staying warm, dry and hydrated, and how to best use up daylight while you can. Many thanks to Alexander R. for leading our service on Sunday morning, and to Mr. Jeff Martin who served as the second adult and provided a wealth of knowledge regarding cold weather camping.
